I can still call this game original because, unlike most successful games, nobody has tried to copy the style. The first Pandemonium was original too, and this sequel plays a lot like the first game. Let's cut to the chase: the best part about Pandemonium 2 is that it's original. I do hesitate to call it a platform game-it has all of the characteristics of a traditional platformer, but there is nothing traditional about this game. You have your traditional coin gathering, jumping on the bad guys' heads to kill them, moving from platform to platform, and facing off with bosses at the end of stages. The best way to describe this game is by calling it a platform game. Check out these before and after shots to see what we mean. Pandemoniuml's trio of main characters have undergone a pretty severe facelift (particularly Nikki, who looks like an entirely different person in all ways but one. Pandemonium 2 should be on store shelves in the middle of October (the version previewed was about 75 percent complete), so be sure to check back next month for the Review Crew's opinions of the final game. ![]() The camera work is more aggressive too, and there are more areas that require lightning-fast reflexes to get by. Techniques like this are commonplace in P2, and they require you to use your head as well as your thumbs (the tell-tale sign of a good platformer). For example, you might have to pull a switch in one room to open up a path in another. There's a certain puzzle element found in many stages as well. This adds a lot to the gameplay and makes for more interesting stage layouts than those found in the first game. They can climb ropes, travel handover-hand underneath certain areas and most importantly, they can pull themselves up ledges (Lara Croft-style). Both characters share some new abilities: Nikki on the other hand is more or less the same as she was (with her ever-useful double jump), but her experience with magic has improved quite a bit. His jump has been improved a bit as well. but now he can throw Sid (his head-on-a-staff sidekick) and direct him toward coins and treasures that may have been otherwise unreachable. Fargus can use his tumble attack from the original Pandemoniuml. Before each stage you choose to ploy as either Nikki or Fargus: each has unique abilities that can help (or hinder) your progress, depending on which stage you're on. Like the original, gameplay is essentially 2-D side-scrolling fare with a freestyle 3-D camera that creates the illusion of a 3-D world (without sacrificing control). There are a total of 19 stages in Pandemonium 2. Nikki and Fergus, have undergone changes as well-Fargus simply looks a bit older (and more psychotic), while Nikki's been given a complete makeover-in every area imaginable (make of that what you will). Gone are the shiny, happy graphics of the original, replaced with darker, more trippy psychedelic visuals. Pandemonium 2 takes place in the same world as the first game, but it's not entirely obvious at first glance. While the gameplay is more or less true to the original, the overall look and feel of the game has changed quite a bit. buy for PS owners.Ĭrystnl Dynamics is currently putting the finishing touches on the sequel to last year's hit "2 1/2-D" action-platformer for the PlayStation. One minute you're pushing "right," but then the camera angle changes and "right" Is now "up." Nothing a few plays can't remedy, but it's still annoying. The control was tricky sometimes when the camera changed, but almost all games that are in a pseudo 3 D world like Pandemonium 2 Is, have this problem. That's how I felt about Pandemonium 2-the graphics were just a bonus. ![]() When a platform game is done well, regardless of any fancy graphics, it's a joy to play. But on top of all the cool 3-D graphics effects in the game, it is a lot of fun to play. ![]() I will say that the sprite graphics in Pandemonium 2 aren't really that impressive. The graphics are stepped up from the old one, complete with neat-o lighting effects and more crazy panning camera angles, lust like the first one, the views had me wowing again and again. It may be more of the same thing more or less, but it's still good. Pandemonium 2 (called Pandy 2 by some) Is pretty damn cool. but I don't like the changes at all.I mean why is the main female character so "hot" all of a sudden? Anyway, let's get on to the good stuff-namely, the game. Why in the hell did Crystal Dynamics change the characters so much? I mean sure, some time has passed so maybe they grew up.

If it’s windy and you can’t hear, use your arms to signal positioning, but make sure you discuss it beforehand so you’re both on the same page. With the bearing you’ve taken, send your most courageous companion on ahead, making sure they know to walk slowly and listen for your explicitly detailed directions of “left a bit… stop there… right a bit.” to ensure they’ve walked in line with the bearing. In a situation where you can’t make out any features at all, this technique would be pretty darn difficult. Done by sight alone, it’s easier than you might think to line up the wrong feature and start heading in the wrong direction. Trev told us that many folk fall into the trap of trying to set the map by using features and landmarks. A simple task, but one that Trev and Dave often see done wrong. What I am saying is that just because someone isn’t a developer or doesn’t have a degree in computer scientist, it doesn’t mean that they can’t participate in an automation endeavor. ![]() We still need talented humans to perform that testing. I believe in my career-span there will always be some testing challenges that are not automation candidates because they can’t be automated in a valuable way or they can’t be automated at all. I’m not that person who says “all testers must learn to code”. Those testers an then exploit the provided capabilities. Some teams will have automation specialists who create tools and frameworks to provide to the team members who have less experience in programming but, perhaps, have a high degree of skill in testing. Clearly, a higher level of software development sophistication and experience is required to create a tool like Selenium than to use a tool like Selenium. For instance, it generally requires a smaller amount of automation acumen to create and maintain automated scripts than it does to create and maintain an automation tool think about developing scripts on top of Selenium as opposed to developing Selenium itself. We can further break down the aspects of creation. Additionally, in my opinion, the more experience you have the less important your formal training tends to be for most jobs. The more experience you have, the more mistakes you’ve (hopefully) already learned from, and the more appropriate your automation implementation will be. There are many ways in which we can acquire this acumen, everything from formal schooling to on the job training there’s no set, best way to gain this ability. As such, we need sufficient programming acumen to create an automation endeavor that is both audience appropriate and maintainable. In order to create automation, we need to develop software because automation is a software development activity. If we need advanced programming skills to maintain our automation, we may have over complicated it. That said, rarely do you need a computer science degree or be a seasoned software developer to maintain automation. In general, some amount of programming is required to be able to perform maintenance in an automation system. ![]() It can also be as complex as debugging, modifying, and testing automation code. Maintenance can be as simple as changing the automation’s configuration to run against a different test environment. The ability to maintain our automation is a superset of execution if we expect to test any of the changes we make to our automation, we need to be able to execute it. Or perhaps is just a training issue this is an issues can usually be solved relatively easily. If only a small group of people are capable of using the tool, we probably have an unacceptable bottleneck. If we find we are unable to run the tool or take action on its results, we may well have a problem with our tool or how we are using our tool. We still have to know our jobs and our product domains. In order to do this, some expertise in the system and in the automation tool is necessary the tool is not doing our jobs, instead, it’s helping us do our jobs. I mean running an automation tool that executes logic against a system under test, understanding what the tool is doing, evaluating the results of that tool’s execution, and taking appropriate actions based on the results. By execute, I don’t mean clicking a button and emailing results to someone. The basic automation skill is that of executing automation. I like to think of automation acumen in terms of nested circles like the ones below. In each of the two audience types, there will be different levels of automation acumen. I wrote previously about the automation audience both here and here. To that, I tend to play the Kirk-like role and say “so what?” So what if you are not a programmer? It’s my belief that everyone can participate in an automation endeavor. I usually interpret this as “I don’t know how to program so I can’t do automation”. ![]() In our testing community, we often hear a similar statement from testers who might relate to McCoy: I’m a tester not a programmer/coder/developer/automator. This was McCoy's way of expressing to Kirk that what Kirk was asking him to do was something he believed he was incapable of, or maybe that he just should not be asked to do. “I’m a doctor, not a bricklayer”, “I’m a doctor not an engineer”, etc. Typically, these were Doctor McCoy’s responses to suggestions/orders by Captain Kirk that the good doctor perform some activities that were outside his typical medical purview. PNG-8 uses an adaptive color palette capable of up to 256 colors. You may also have a raster image with some transparent areas that should let their background shine through. In these cases, the best format is a PNG file, which comes in two flavors, PNG-8 and PNG-24. However, sometimes a graphic won’t have an SVG version available, and JPEG compression artifacts would look ugly in flat areas of color and with sharp lines. SVGs are best for images that are composed of solid shapes and sharp lines, while JPEGs are best for photographs and artwork. Efforts like the Responsive Images Community Group and Zurb Interchange are helping to advance the state of the art in this area. However, there’s still room for improvement it’s much better to deliver pixels only to the devices that will actually be able to use them. There aren’t enough 5k iMacs out there yet to justify anything greater. However, I generally only worry about 27″ monitors at 2560×1440 and below. That’s a moving target, which is why SVGs are so great. However, if you send more pixel data than there are physical pixels on a device and the image is scaled downwards, it’s just wasted bandwidth.Īt the very least, you should optimize images so that they’re never larger than the highest resolution you expect them to be displayed on. Sometimes you’ll need to let the browser rescale an image a bit so that it works in a responsive design. All other factors being equal, more pixels usually mean slower page load times.įor better or worse, the web doesn’t deal in pixels it’s a fluid medium that looks different from one screen to the next. However, raster-based file formats like JPEG and PNG have an absolute resolution expressed in pixels. SVGs are resolution independent, so they don’t need to be rescaled. Still, you should come up with a progressive enhancement strategy if you think your pages won’t work for IE8 visitors without these graphics. They’re supported in all modern browsers along with IE9+ (source: ). That being said, you should try to use SVGs for all your images first, and only in cases like photographs or artwork should another format be used instead.Īfter many years of browser incompatibilities, the age of SVGs has finally arrived. For extremely high-detail images like photographs or artwork, you’ll still need to use a raster-based file format that uses pixels. SVGs are mostly good for representing graphical imagery composed with shapes, but they’re not good at everything. When you optimize images with a tool like SVGO-GUI, the file sizes can be even smaller. These shapes are then automatically projected into the physical pixel grid, regardless of its resolution. That’s because SVG files store images as a series of coordinates that form shapes, rather than pixel data. In other words, you can zoom in to an SVG all you want and they’ll always look sharp. SVGs are great for the web because they have infinite resolution and very small file sizes. The SVG format works best for graphics like this one. ![]() As Stanley the Bugman, players are positioned under Donkey Kong, who has taken over a multi-level greenhouse.
